Shockwave Therapy can provide fast effective pain relief for common tendon injuries. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a procedure where shock waves are passed through the skin to the injured part of the body. Extracorporeal means outside of the body.
What is Shockwave Therapy?
The shockwaves are mechanical and not electric. They are audible, low-energy sound waves, which work by increasing blood flow to the injured area, reducing pain and speeding up your body’s healing process.
Not all shockwaves are created equally!
It is important to note that not all shockwave machines are the same. We use internationally recognised research supported protocols and our latest Swiss Dolorcast machine has robust clinical data to support its use. You will usually require a course of at least 3-5 treatments, two to three weeks apart. Ocassionally in chronic conditions it may be suitable to have more treatments but this will be reviewed after your initial course.
The advantages of Shockwave are:
- It’s non invasive and there is no risk of infection
- There is no risk of tendon ruptures which may occur with steroid injections
- It’s recommended by NICE for chronic conditions
What can Shockwave Therapy treat?
Tendon pain like in the Achilles tendon, Patellar tendon and Rotator Cuff. Painful conditions including Tennis elbow, Golfers elbow and Plantar fascitis
